Background of the Study
Corporate ethics policies are essential in ensuring responsible business practices, especially in industries like telecommunications, which directly impact millions of lives. Telecommunications firms are at the forefront of technological innovation and service delivery, making ethical practices critical for building trust and maintaining competitive advantage. Effective ethics policies safeguard against unethical practices such as data breaches, exploitative pricing, and false advertising, ensuring compliance with industry regulations and customer expectations (Ogungbemi et al., 2023).
In Plateau State, telecommunications firms operate within a dynamic environment characterized by increasing demand for connectivity and digital services. However, the rapid expansion of the telecommunications sector has also introduced ethical concerns, such as privacy violations, inadequate customer service, and lack of transparency. These issues highlight the importance of evaluating the effectiveness of ethics policies in addressing such challenges and fostering sustainable growth.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the existence of corporate ethics policies in telecommunications firms in Plateau State, there is a growing perception of unethical practices, such as inadequate disclosure of service terms, poor handling of customer complaints, and excessive charges for services (Nwankwo & Obi, 2024). These practices undermine customer trust and loyalty, posing a significant risk to long-term profitability.
Furthermore, the implementation of ethics policies often varies across firms, leading to inconsistencies in ethical practices and compliance levels. This inconsistency raises questions about the adequacy and enforcement of these policies, as well as their role in promoting ethical behavior within the telecommunications industry.
